The word “diet” is surely one of the most used words in the big wide world of wellness. And yet, if you eat food or liquid of any sort, you’re technically on a diet. Many diets are simple — but not easy. This is particularly true for those who travel extensively, for business, pleasure, or both.

There is perhaps nothing more confusing under the sun than modern diet advice. If you travel for any length of time with co-workers you’ll have seen many diet variants; hopefully not the most absurd ones, like the baby food diet, the diet where you only eat food wearing blue-tinted sunglasses, the cotton ball diet (yes, you eat cotton balls!), the cigarette diet (which was prescribed by doctors), and the Sleeping Beauty Diet (you can’t eat when you sleep — a diet followed by Elvis Presley). All kidding aside, the truth is, most of us are not immune to so-called fad diets, many of which are extremely alluring with rich anecdotal evidence; sometimes rich in research and sometimes simply loved by the rich and famous.

For road warriors, there are added dimensions to diet dilemmas. The most obvious challenge is having reliable access to the required food types while traveling. This is especially true while in transit. Just ask a celiac how difficult it can be to order a restaurant meal in some countries, even on luxury holidays.

Yet, for international travellers, other challenges can be afoot. These are FIVE KEY INGREDIENTS for taking your diet on the road:

  • AVAILABILITY (How easy will it be to get the food you need?)

  • DIGESTIBILITY (How gastro-intestinally friendly are the food types for traveling by air or on longer outdoor day excursions)

  • FUNCTIONALITY (Does the diet offer sufficient caloric energy for activities?)

  • PORTABILITY (Is it convenient to bring dry foodstuffs to keep you going between meals?)

  • ENJOYMENT (Does the diet allow you to enjoy your vacation or business trip experience?)

We’ve selected five of the TOP RATED diets (by health evidence and popularity) to view through the lens of the road-warrior.
